Abstract:

Ventral incisional hernia is a frequent complication following laparotomies, especially in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms or obesity. An incisional hernia may bring pain and discomfort to patients. Moreover, obstruction and strangulation of bowel caused by an incisional hernia may result in death of the patient. Furthermore, incisional hernias not only affect patients' health, it also creates a heavy financial burden for the healthcare system. In recent years, optimizing surgical techniques and materials to close abdominal wall incision holds the potential of preventing the development of incisional hernias, reducing postoperative disability, and saving costs in the healthcare system. The incidence, related risk factors, currently treatment status and prevention of incisional hernia will be elaborated in this review.
