Abstract:

Objective

To summarize the clinical experience of open preperitoneal inguinal hernia repair.

Methods

From January 2014 to December 2016, 214 cases of inguinal hernia underwent open preperitoneal repair in Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital were analyzed retrospectively. The follow-up period was 3 to 24 months.

Results

All operations in this series were successfully completed, except for 1 case of recurrent hernia converting to Lichtenstein repair due to dense adhesion. The main complications were seroma/effusion (3.3%), urinary retention (1.4%), and foreign body sensation/discomfort (2.3%). 200 cases were followed up for more than 12 months. No recurrence occurred in 3 months after operation, 2 cases had long term recurrence, and the total recurrence rate was 0.93%.

Conclusion

Open preperitoneal inguinal hernia repair is a safe and feasible treatment for inguinal hernia, and the postoperative complications and recurrence rate are superior to those of the traditional open operation.
