Abstract:

Abdominal wall hernias are among the most common conditions encountered in general surgery, but their pathophysiological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. The conventional theory that attributes hernia formation primarily to fascial weakness has certain limitations. Sarcopenia is an age-associated syndrome characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass and impaired muscle strength and physical function. Increasing evidence suggests that sarcopenia is associated with the occurrence, progression, and prognosis of abdominal wall hernias. This review comprehensively summarizes recent research on the associations between sarcopenia and various types of abdominal wall hernias, including umbilical trocar-site hernias, complex abdominal wall hernias, inguinal hernias, parastomal hernias, and incisional hernias. It also discusses the impact of sarcopenia on surgical outcomes following abdominal wall hernia repair and potential intervention and treatment strategies. The aim is to provide a reference for future clinical and basic research on sarcopenia-associated abdominal wall hernias.
