Abstract:

Inguinal hernia is one of the most common conditions encountered in general surgery. Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (LIHR) has become a widely used surgical approach owing to its minimally invasive nature and rapid postoperative recovery. The clinical use of biological meshes in LIHR has increased, and these meshes have shown potential advantages in reducing postoperative complications, particularly among younger patients. This review summarizes recent advances in the clinical application of biological meshes in LIHR, evaluates their safety, efficacy, and potential benefits, and discusses their limitations and possible directions for improvement. Studies suggest that biological meshes may promote tissue regeneration and healing, reduce the long-term retention of implanted foreign material, and lower the risks of postoperative complications such as mesh infection and chronic pain. With continuing advances in laparoscopic surgical techniques and biological mesh technology, the use of biological meshes in LIHR may become safer and more effective, providing clinicians with additional treatment options.
