Abstract:

Objective

To analyze the factors influencing the quality of life in patients with parastomal hernia following radical rectal cancer surgery.

Methods

A retrospective survey study was conducted, including 48 patients with parastomal hernia treated at Peking University People's Hospital from January 2021 to January 2023. General patient information was collected, and their disease status was investigated. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality of Life Questionnaire was used to assess patients' quality of life, and the self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) was used to evaluate their anxiety levels. Logistic regression analysis was employed to identify factors influencing the quality of life in patients with parastomal hernia.

Results

The 48 patients had an average SAS score of (48.23±16.73) points and an overall quality of life score of (44.39±14.63) points. Factors such as age, body mass index (BMI), marital status, type of medical expenses, occupation, nature of the stoma, and presence of complications were identified as influencing the quality of life in patients with parastomal hernia (P<0.05). Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that BMI, marital status, occupation, nature of the stoma, and complications were risk factors affecting the quality of life in these patients (P<0.05). Conversely, the type of medical expenses and SAS score were protective factors (P<0.05).

Conclusion

Multiple factors affect the overall quality of life in patients with parastomal hernia. Active intervention measures can be taken to improve the quality of life for these patients.
