Surgical treatment of mesh infection after tension free repair of inguinal hernia

Abstract:

Objective

To investigate reasons and surgical treatment of mesh infection after tension free repair of inguinal hernia.

Methods

The clinical data of 12 patients with mesh infection after tension free repair of inguinal hernia admitted in Nanjing Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University from January 2010 to January 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. The reason and surgical treatment of mesh infection after tension free repair of inguinal hernia were analyzed and summarized.

Results

All 12 patients were cured by reoperation to remove the infected meshes. There was no recurrence of hernia during the postoperative 9~36 months of follow-up.

Conclusion

Mesh infection is a serious complication of tension free repair of inguinal hernia. The infected meshes needed to be removed by reoperation if there were mesh infections. The recurrence rate of hernia was not increased after reoperation.
