Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the impact of permanent colostomy on patients' life and to analyze its influencing factors.

Methods

A total of 218 patients with permanent colostomy were invited to complete self-designed demographic questionnaire and Colostomy Impact Score (CIS).

Results

54.6% of patients believed that permanent colostomy had a significant impact on their quality of life, odors from the stoma and leakage from the pocket had the greatest influence on the patients. Multivariate regression analysis showed that age (OR=1.137, P<0.001), times of daily clean stoma (OR=1.438, P=0.015), postoperative time (OR=0.098, P<0.001), and regular contact with nurse (OR=0.098, P=0.002) were the influencing factors of the colostomy impact condition.

Conclusion

Permanent colostomy has a significant impact on patients' lives. Medical staff should pay more attention to elderly patients in clinical practice, help patients train regular defecation habits, enhance continuous care services for patients after discharge and provide professional support to patients, so as to reduce the impact of stoma and improve their quality of life.

Key words: Permanent colostomy, Colostomy impact, Influencing factor
