Evaluation of mesh repair for parastomal hernias: A report of 38 cases

Abstract:

Objective

To summarize the mesh repair with open Onlay or laparoscopic keyhole mesh for the treatment of parastomal hernia.

Methods

Thirty-eight cases with parastomal hernia were treated in Sixth People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao tong University from January 2005 to April 2018, and the clinical data were analyzed retrospectively.

Results

All of the thirty-eight patients had hernioplasty with keyhole meshor Ultrapro mesh: 15 underwent open hernia repair plus stoma reconstruction, 6 were laparoscopic IPOM hernia repair, 5 were hybrid repair and 12 were Lap-re-Do repair. The mean operating time was (150±72) minutes (of 40 to 300 minutes). The total time of follow-up was 2 to 46 months. The postoperative complications included 2 cases of hernia recurrence, 4 cases of seroma, 3 cases of wound infection and 1 case of slight intestinal circulation disorder. All were cured after therapy.

Conclusion

The parastomal hernia repair with meshis safe and effective, which should be individualized by careful preoperative evaluation and actual intraoperative conditions.
