Abstract:

Incarcerated inguinal hernia is defined as inguinal hernia with inability to reduce the hernia contents into the abdomen. Strangulation is defined when the blood supply to the hernia contents is compromised. As an emergency condition, once the patient was diagnosed with incarcerated/strangulated inguinal hernia, they should be treated with emergency surgery immediately. The incarcerated/strangulated inguinal hernia is diagnosed by medical history and through physical examination combined with necessary laboratory and image examinations. The surgical treatment for incarcerated/strangulated inguinal hernia includes closure of the hernia sac after reduction of the hernia contents and tension-free repair on a second operation, using open tension-free hernia repair, and laparoscopic tension-free hernia repair. Recently, the practice of tension-free hernia repair for incarcerated/strangulated inguinal hernia has attracted more and more attention. This article briefly reviews the progress in the diagnosis and treatment of incarcerated/ strangulated inguinal hernia.
