Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the effect of Lichtenstein procedure on the quality of life of elderly patients with inguinal hernia.

Methods

88 elderly patients with indirect hernia who were treated in Lishui district people's hospital from January 2017 to December 2018 were divided into the observation group (44 cases) and control group (44 cases) according to different surgical methods. Standard Lichtenstein procedure was performed in the observation group and mesh-plug repair was performed in the control group. The operation indexes, complications, scores of VAS and SF-36 in the two groups were observed and compared.

Results

There were no significant differences in operation time, postoperative hospitalization time and intraoperative blood loss between observation group and control group (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in overall postoperative complications between observation group and control group (34.09% vs 36.36%, P>0.05). Compared with 1stday after surgery, VAS scores of two groups were decreased at 3rd day and 1 month after surgery (P<0.05). The VAS scores of the observation group were lower than those of the control group at 1st and 3rd days after surgery (P<0.05). At 1 month after operation, there was no significant difference in VAS scores between the two groups (P>0.05). Compared with before treatment, SF-36 scores after treatmentin both groups were increased, and the scores in observation group was higher than that in control group (P<0.05).

Conclusion

In the treatment process of elderly patients with inguinal hernia, Lichtenstein procedure has equal effect as mesh-plug surgery, and can achieve positive therapeutic effect. Lichtenstein procedure can reduce postoperative pain of patients and has advantages in improving postoperative quality of life in elderly patients with inguinal hernia.
