Diagnostic value of preoperative high frequency ultrasound examination for indirect inguinal hernia and direct inguinal hernia

Abstract:

Objective

To explore the diagnostic value of preoperative high frequency ultrasound examination in indirect and direct inguinal hernia.

Methods

A total of 372 patients who underwent inguinal hernia surgery from June 2018 to June 2019 in Dongfang People's Hospital were selected. All patients underwent systematic surgical examination, X-ray abdominal dialysis, and differential diagnosis using ultrasonic diagnostic equipment. The differential points of indirect inguinal hernia and direct inguinal hernia were analyzed; the preoperative ultrasound diagnosis, preoperative surgical examination and surgical results were compared; the accuracy, specificity, false negative, positive predicted value, and sensitivity of preoperative ultrasound diagnosis and preoperative surgical examination were compared.

Results

Among the 372 patients, 304 cases were diagnosed as indirect hernias and 68 cases as direct hernias by the operation. There was no significant difference between the accuracy of ultrasound diagnosis and the results of surgery (P>0.05); the accuracy of surgical examination was lower than that of surgery results (P<0.05). The accuracy, specificity, positive predictive value, and sensitivity of ultrasound diagnosis were higher than those of surgical examinations, and false negatives were lower than those of surgical examinations (P<0.05).

Conclusion

Preoperative high-frequency ultrasound diagnosis of indirect and direct inguinal hernia has the advantages of reproducibility, non-invasiveness, quickness, simple operation, and clear imaging, etc. The diagnosis result is more accurate, and the type of hernia can be accurately identified. And it provides more accurate guidance for hernia defect finding and a reliable basis for surgery.
