Prophylactic oral antibiotics in tension-free hernia repair

Objective

To discusses the effect of prophylactic oral antibiotics on prevention wound infection after inguinal hernia.

Methods

A retrospective analysis of the Guangdong provincial People's Hospital in January 2015 to December 2015 was conducted on 306 patients with unilateral inguinal hernia undergoing elective surgery. Clinical data of the patients were collected. 151 cases with postoperative oral antibiotics were selected as experimental group, while 155 cases without oral antibiotics during the same period as control group. Postoperative wound infection was observed in the 2 groups.

Results

All patients with hernia surgery entered the clinical pathway. At 1 week of postoperative follow-up, there was no statistically significant difference in incidence of wound infection between the 2 groups (P>0.05).

Conclusion

The postoperative antibiotics has not been effective in preventing wound infection in patients with inguinal hernia.
